COLLEGE STATION, Texas – It was a tough night in the Lone Star State for the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball team, as they fell 11-2 in five innings to the #2 Texas A&M Aggies Tuesday evening at Davis Diamond.
Texas A&M came out swinging and never looked back, plating three runs in the first inning and adding on in bunches, including a five-run fourth that put the game out of reach and ultimately ended it early via the run rule.
Louisiana starter Tyra Clary ran into trouble in the opening frame after giving up a walk and a single to load the bases. Texas A&M capitalized immediately, with a two-run double by center fielder Allie Enright making it 3-0 before the Cajuns could blink.
In the third, the Aggies flexed their power, as Mac Barbara and KK Dement launched back-to-back homers to extend the lead to 6-1. That inning was capped by an RBI single and a walk before Enright crushed a grand slam to center in the fourth, ballooning the score to 11-2.
Despite the loss, there were a couple of highlights for the Cajuns. Catcher Savannah White launched a solo home run in the third inning, her first of the season, giving Louisiana its first run of the night. Later, Erin Ardoin delivered an RBI double in the fourth to score McKayla Ferguson, trimming the Aggie lead to four at the time.
The Cajuns tallied four hits in total, including singles from Maddie Hayden and Emily Smith, but struggled to string together rallies against a strong Aggie staff.
Texas A&M’s Enright was the star of the night, going 2-for-3 with a double, a grand slam, and six RBIs. She led an Aggie lineup that pounded out nine hits and drew five walks, keeping constant pressure on the Cajuns’ pitching staff.
Louisiana used four pitchers in total, with Clary, Wheeler, Noble, and Ryan all seeing time in the circle. The group surrendered nine hits and 11 runs, all earned, over just 4.2 innings.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (now 23-23 overall) will look to bounce back this weekend as they return to Sun Belt Conference play when they Travel to Texas state for a series that will have a huge impact in the conference standings.
As for Tuesday night, the Cajuns ran into a buzzsaw in College Station—and it wore maroon and white.
