Through the opening stretch of the 2026 season, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns have shown flashes of a team capable of contending in the Sun Belt Conference. A strong start built early momentum, even earning Louisiana a spot in the national rankings at No. 25, a recognition of the team’s early consistency and potential.
But that ranking proved to be short-lived.
A difficult weekend at Texas State, which ended in a three-game sweep capped by a run-rule loss in the finale, quickly erased Louisiana from the Top 25 and brought renewed focus to areas that must improve as conference play intensifies. The Cajuns now sit at 16–8 overall and 2–4 in Sun Belt play... still a solid record, but one that reflects the growing pains of league competition.
The brief appearance in the Top 25 was a sign of progress, but it may have also come with unintended consequences.
Whether consciously or not, teams can sometimes press, or even overlook opponents, when playing with a number next to their name. Texas State, a conference opponent that was just swept by ULM on the road, played with urgency and capitalized on mistakes, while Louisiana struggled to match that intensity at key moments.
If there is a lesson to take from the weekend, it may be this: rankings don’t win games. Execution does.
Offensively, the Cajuns have several players producing at a high level, providing a solid foundation despite recent struggles.
Catcher Colt Brown has been one of the team’s most consistent bats, hitting .333 with 29 hits, 15 RBIs, and a .471 slugging percentage. Infielder Lee Amedee has also been a key contributor, batting .301 while leading the team in runs scored (19) and adding 14 RBIs.
Additional production has come from Rigoberto Hernandez (.275, 3 HR, 14 RBIs) and Drew Markle (.271, 3 HR, 15 RBIs), both of whom have delivered power in the middle of the lineup.
Still, consistency remains the issue. Louisiana has struggled at times to string together quality at-bats throughout an entire lineup, particularly against conference pitching, something that was magnified during the Texas State series.
From a team standpoint, Louisiana’s pitching staff has posted a 4.31 ERA while holding opponents to a .222 batting average, numbers that suggest a group capable of keeping the Cajuns competitive.
The starting rotation has generally provided stability, giving Louisiana a chance to win most nights. However, the transition from starter to closer has not always been smooth.
The middle bullpen continues to be an area that must improve. While the overall numbers are respectable, late-inning execution has been inconsistent, allowing opponents to extend innings or swing momentum. We saw that this past weekend with countless two out scoring off of the long ball.
That issue played a major role in several losses this season, where games that were still within reach slipped away in the middle to late frames. Stabilizing that portion of the bullpen will be critical to preserving leads and closing out tight contests.
Defensively, Louisiana has been steady. Lee Amedee has been flawless in the field, posting a perfect fielding percentage while anchoring the infield, and multiple players have contributed error-free performances.
That reliability has helped keep the Cajuns in games and remains one of the team’s strengths moving forward.
Despite the disappointment of the weekend (and the quick rise and fall from the national rankings) the bigger picture remains unchanged.
Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. I know that phrase is cliche, but it is too easy to expect instant gratification in a game that rewards patience and perseverance. Don't fall into that trap.
And of course, asingle series does not define a season. The Cajuns have already shown they are capable of winning baseball. But if Louisiana hopes to sniff the Top 25 and stay there, drastic improvement is necessary.
The offense must become more consistent from top to bottom, we need some power in our lineup, players need to be consistent (and disciplened) at the plate and the middle bullpen must settle in to protect leads late in games. Just as importantly, the Cajuns must bring the same level of focus and urgency regardless of opponent or ranking.
For now, the message is clear: don’t panic.
But improvement is needed in several areas, and much sooner than later.
